focus here Technique

modifying this technique

  • Improvise new objects to focus on. Changing it up keeps students from zoning out.
  • You can use this technique to support vocab acquisition by asking students to focus on things around the room that are new or challenging words.

skill breakdown

BRING THE ATTENTION FROM OUTSIDE TO INSIDE
Karim starts by directing students to the ceiling and floor.

  • Notice: When Karim has the attention of everyone in the class, he asks them to focus on themselves by starting with their knees and hands. When their bodies are calm, he finally asks them to take a deep breath together.
  • Why? This order helps students gradually bring the attention to their own bodies and minds.

BE PATIENT
Give instructions till everyone hears you. Keep directing students to focus on things around the room until you have everyone’s attention.

  • Why? In a unfocused class, it can be hard to get everyone's attention right off the bat. Be patient.

MODEL CALMNESS
Karim starts the technique by loudly projecting his voice. This helps him attract attention. But as the technique progresses, he makes his voice softer and calmer. He even slows down the instructions and makes his body movements more gentle.

  • Why? By making this change, he is modeling the same cool-down that he is asking of students.

KEEP THE FOCUS
When your students are focused and calm, don’t break the spell! Consider how you give the next set of instructions. Use the calm voice and demeanor you’ve been modeling to keep the students focused.
